At the top of the steps, I peeked into the room to see Mark hovering over a crib with three sleeping babies. Amanda was also asleep on the bed. Troy noticed me from his seat next to her and came over to meet me.

“How was the first night?” I asked.

“Tiresome. Camilla is a screamer,” he said. “They are wonderful though. I never thought I could ever love like this. Before you came to town, I was happy to be a lone wolf and sheriff. Now I have a family.”

“You were an idiot about not wanting those kids,” I said.

He grinned. “Yes, I was.” Proud papa. “I don’t know if I was more of an idiot over the babies or Mark. Can you see the change?”

“I saw it last night through my sight. I can see the man he is going to be,” I said.

“You can?”

“Yes, he’ll be handsome, strong, but with a gentle, steady spirit,” I said.

“Exactly what a pack needs,” Troy said. “Unless one of the girls beats him to it.”

“Ever seen any female-led packs?” I asked.

“Occasionally. They are rare, but there are matriarchal packs,” he said.

“What about Dominick?” I asked.

“He’s still my second. I’ll need him more than ever while I train Mark. It will be his job to watch over the pack for me when I’m busy,” Troy explained.

“Then you should probably reassure him of his place. He looked sad last night. Even though he’s renounced his alpha side, it doesn’t mean that he has forgotten that part of himself. I assume there is a part of him that still longs to hold that role,” I said.

“Really? Assuming is bad, Grace,” Troy teased.

“I assume based on my own suppressed desires to rule,” I said.

“Oh, well, in that case, I’d say it wasn’t assuming at all. I worry about my children in this war,” Troy said, looking back to his daughters.

“We all do. Seeing that they are safe is the top priority going forward. Our children shouldn't suffer for our actions,” I said.

“You have. You are suffering because your father allowed Rhiannon and his council to banish his daughter,” he said with a twinge of hatred in his voice.

“I wasn’t innocent,” I replied, watching Winnie and Mark. She eyed him curiously. I wondered if she could see him through her sight. We hadn’t talked about fairy sight, but it would be a conversation that we needed to have soon.

“He was your father,” Troy said.

“I know that when he left this world, he was sorry for what happened. I also know that in his own way he loved me. There are those who don’t even have that,” I said.

“Like Dominick. And Amanda,” he said.

“And you,” I added.

“And me,” he agreed. “Mark, why don’t you go play with Winnie?”

“I need to protect my sisters,” he said.

“Mark, I’m here with them. Your mother and I will protect them,” Troy said.

“Okay,” Mark replied reluctantly.

Mark walked out of the room with Winnie on his heels. “Mom, can I stay and play here today?”

“It’s up to Mark’s daddy,” I said.
